Santa Maria (Calanca) – Tower

Strategically situated on a rocky hilltop behind the church, the 18 m tall Santa Maria Tower offers an excellent panoramic view. The remains of an ancient fortification dating back to the 13th or 14th Century, the tower consists of massive stonework with steep stairwells integrated within the thickness of the walls, enabling intercommunication between the three levels. Two of the levels, furnished with cross-vaulted ceilings, served as living quarters. With its pentagonal exterior and square interior, the Santa Maria Tower is a rare example for the Grisons of a tower inspired by architectural models of N. Central France.
